The medieval defenses of Warwick were born from the threat of war. In the year 914, Æthelflæd the Lady of Mercia ordered a massive defensive barrier to be built to protect the existing settlement against brutal Viking raids. Over time, those earth and timber walls were replaced, and a stone gateway was carved straight through the solid bedrock of the hill.
